You can find the U Malířů 1543 restaurant on the picturesque Maltese Square in Prague’s Lesser Town. It ranks among the oldest restaurants in Prague—extant records date back as far as 1543, and historical sources list Emperor Rudolf II himself among its famous patrons.
A Story Spanning Centuries
In the 15th century, the building was constructed directly against the defensive wall in front of the Maltese church and monastery; at the time, it was governed by the monastery's legal jurisdiction and records. In 1543, a painter named Šic purchased the house from Jiřík Kuřátka for 40 kop of groschen, and ever since, the site has been known as U Malířů 1543 ("At the Painters' 1543"). In 1604, Jan Litoměřický of Jizbice acquired the property; in 1607, Benedikt Galthan bought it from Litoměřický’s orphans and completely rebuilt the structure.
At the end of the 17th century, the building underwent a second renovation and was briefly known as U bílého kohouta ("At the White Rooster"). B. Mázel left a significant mark on the building's appearance between 1936 and 1937. It was in the early 20th century that the restaurant became a renowned haven for artists, bohemians, and painters who loved to gather there for excellent cask wine from Moravia. They often settled their bills with their own work, using their brushes to add to the original wall frescoes that form the heart of the interior today.
